The House Story · 5 min read

If You’re Gonna Bet on Something, Bet on Yourself.

What started with R50 and a little bit of nerve became The Brand.e House. This is the story behind the bet.

People often ask me how The Brand.e House started. Most people assume it began the day I launched a website, designed a logo or announced it online. It didn't. The Brand.e House started years before it ever had a name. It started every time I said yes to an opportunity.

Every freelance project. Every late-night blog I wrote after work. Every client who trusted me before I had a portfolio worth showing. Every uncomfortable conversation where I admitted I didn't know something, and then went and learned it. Looking back, I wasn't building a business. I was building experience. I just didn't know it yet.

For years, I worked a full-time job while freelancing on the side. It started as a creative outlet and a way to earn a little extra money, but more importantly, it became a place where I could learn. Every project taught me something different. Every client pushed me to think differently. Every deadline made me a little better than I was before.

The R50 that started it all.

There was one moment where I had R50 left in my account. I could have held onto it. Instead, I spent it applying for another freelance opportunity. Looking back, that wasn't the moment The Brand.e House was born. It was simply another moment where I bet on myself.

That one application turned into an interview. That interview became a client. That client introduced me to another client. One opportunity became two. Two became three. Eventually, one of those conversations led to marketing. Not because I'd planned it. Because I kept saying yes.

I learned alongside experienced marketers, worked with businesses across different industries and had the opportunity to work with clients from around the world. Every campaign, every challenge and every mistake added another layer to my understanding of what actually works in marketing.

It wasn't an overnight decision.

The Brand.e House wasn't built because I woke up one morning and decided I was a marketer. It was built after years of writing, creating, learning, testing, making mistakes, working with international clients and seeing first-hand what actually works in the real world.

By the time I launched The Brand.e House, I wasn't looking for a job. I wasn't even looking to build another agency. I had already been fortunate enough to work with incredible businesses across different industries, and I continue to do so today.

The gap I saw at home.

While I was helping businesses around the world, I kept noticing something closer to home. South African businesses were jumping on every new AI trend. The same captions. The same graphics. The same prompts. The same voices. Everyone suddenly looked the same. That wasn't a gap I noticed internationally. It was a gap I saw here.

Not because South Africa needed another marketing agency. There are already plenty of brilliant agencies doing incredible work. I started The Brand.e House because I wanted to create a place where business owners could learn. A place where marketing made sense. A place where people could ask questions without feeling silly. A place where strategy was explained in plain English. A place where marketing was allowed to have a personality.

What it was really built for.

The Brand.e House wasn't built to become the biggest agency. It was built to become one of the most useful resources for business owners who wanted to understand marketing without feeling overwhelmed by it.

Yes, I offer marketing services. Yes, I work with clients. And yes, I'll happily work with brands in South Africa and around the world if we're the right fit for each other. But if you never become a client and one of my blogs helps you write a better caption, or rethink your branding, or avoid an expensive marketing mistake, then The Brand.e House has already achieved exactly what I hoped it would.

The takeaway.

People often think betting on yourself means having all the answers. It doesn't. It means believing you're capable of figuring them out.

Looking back, I didn't build The Brand.e House because I had a perfect plan. I built it because I kept betting on myself. One opportunity at a time.
